On The Radar: Te’ Holiman

Adante Holiman is taking new strides. He officially began his freshman season with the Texas Rio-Grande Valley Vaqueros and has been given quality playing time, for the most part. In his first week, Holiman was awarded WAC Player of the Week, being an indication that he's beginning his college career on the right note.

Playing in your first game as a freshman can give some early game jitters. It’s a new level of play and the expectations are high. Throughout his college career, Holiman's confidence has always been at an all-time high, and it has been the same so far in college. He’s picking his spots and is getting good quality shots from the perimeter. Plus, he stays in attack mode when penetrating to the basket. Holiman’s ability to absorb contact at the rim has always led to easy baskets or opportunities at the free throw line.

Holiman so far This Season

Holiman showed his capabilities in the Vaqueros’ season opener against Kansas State. Despite a 34-point loss, he was able to check in and provide some spark for his team. Holiman scored 13 points on 3-5 shooting in the contest. In his second game against Southwestern Adventist, he was able to impact the game with his passing as he dished out five assists. What he showed in a small package was the ability to get good quality shots and remain effective on the offensive end.

In seven games, Holiman is averaging 5.7 points on 37 percent shooting from the field. Early in his college career, it must be understood that it's a marathon not a sprint. One of the improvements that he has to make early in the season is increase his free throw percentage. While he had a great first game, he shot 60 percent from the line against Kansas State. The positive in his play is that he has the ability to draw fouls and make his way to the line. Converting on free throws will help Holiman increase his effectiveness on the floor.

Conclusion

Coming into a program as a freshman can be a challenge for young players. Some players have to play perfect in order to see playing time on the floor. For Holiman, his mentality should be to always stay ready for the opportunity. So far, he’s doing that by anticipating passes on offense and shooting with confidence. As the season progresses, Holiman will continue to build his confidence along with the trust from his team.
